The Premature Burial By Edgar Allan Poe - 1232 Words

In â€Å"The Premature Burial† by Edgar Allan Poe uses first person narrative, Congressman’s wife, a banker’s wife, a soldier, a patient, and himself, to show why he was obsessed about the fear of being buried alive during the early nineteenth century. Through this story it tells how five different people are buried alive, the last one himself. During the early nineteenth century it was common for people to be buried alive. Doctors did not have the resources that is available today to help determine whether or not someone was in fact deceased. After going through this for a long time some people decided to help prevent this. They did this by putting a pipe from the ground to the coffin. They tied a bell, sometimes a flag to the end of the pole sticking out of the ground. If the bell rang they knew to come dig up this person. Although this is not very common now, there have been a few reports that have said otherwise. Personal Narrative- Amazon Experience Being a curious little twelve year old who was eager to discover the world, when my father asked me back in 1997 if I wanted to travel to Colombia, I jumped on the opportunity. Little did I know just how much I would be discovering. Colombia held sights, sound, and smells that I had never experienced. Crowded city highways with no marked lanes, the stench of lead exhaust filling the overcrowded streets of the capitol, the freshness of the Andean Mountains filling the country air. The thought of Colombia brings a dozen images and adventures to mind. Out of all of these, however, there is one in particular which I shall never forget.
